Social Etiquette & Communication

Casual & Friendly: Generally, New Zealanders dress informally and are incredibly happy to answer questions—so don’t be shy to ask for help!

Please & Thank You: It is considered polite to say “please” and “thank you” whenever you are buying goods, receiving services, or being helped.

Topics to Avoid: Personal privacy is highly valued. Subjects like salary, mortgages, and age are rarely discussed outside of close family.

Respecting Personal Space: It is polite to avoid making personal comments about someone's weight, age, appearance, or mannerisms. Staring or looking closely at others is also avoided, and behaviors like spitting or littering are considered highly offensive.
